Wholly At HomePsalm 90:1

Eight Moves And No Home Town

This message is for the woman who has moved eight times since she was six and has never had an answer to where are you from that anybody was satisfied with

She has a two second pause before she answers that question and everybody notices it.

Where are you from. It comes up at every new job, every dinner party, every second conversation with a stranger, and it is not a hard question for most people. For her it is a small negotiation: does she say the place she was born, which she left at four and cannot picture, or the place she was at high school, which was three years, or the place she has lived longest, which is four and a half years and which she is about to leave.

She has tried all three. The trouble with the third is that people then ask about the town and she does not know anything about the town.

Eight moves. Her father's work, and then her own, and then a marriage that took her somewhere and then did not.

And what she has never said out loud to anybody, because it sounds self pitying and she would rather die, is that she has been to four funerals in the last decade in four different states and at every single one of them she was the person nobody in the room had known for more than five years.

You know that pause. Maybe your version is different: an accent that does not match a place, a family that scattered, a life with no continuous thread anybody else can see.

Eight Moves And No Home Town

Name the cost, and do not make it charming

There is a version of this that gets written up as freedom, and I am not going to write it. Eight moves costs something.

It cost her the people who would have known her at nineteen and at thirty. She has friends, good ones, and every single one of them met her already formed, which means nobody alive has watched her become anything.

It cost her the funerals, where she stood at the back because standing at the back is what you do when everybody else grew up together.

And it costs her about two seconds every time somebody asks a friendly question, which does not sound like much and is a small tax paid several thousand times.

You have been paying a tax on an ordinary question, and God has never once asked you where you are from. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far off and is acquainted with all your ways, and His Spirit is the one who takes acquainted off a page and puts it in a kitchen with half unpacked boxes in it. Acquainted is a word about long knowledge, and He has had all eight.

Our dwelling place in all generations

There is one line built for a woman with no home town.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.Psalm 90:1

Let the Holy Spirit slow you down over who wrote it. That is Moses, which matters, because if there is a man in Scripture with a complicated answer to where are you from it is him: born in one nation, raised in a palace that was not his, forty years in a country he fled to, and then forty more in a wilderness with no address at all.

And what he writes is not a lament about rootlessness. He identifies the dwelling place, and it is not a location. It is a Person, and it has been the dwelling place in all generations, which means it was already the answer during every one of those decades, and the same Spirit is the one who makes that a live claim about a woman with a moving truck rather than a nice line for a funeral.

You have been living somewhere the whole time, and the address was never one you would have been asked about at a dinner party. That is not a consolation prize for the unrooted. The written word makes God Himself the dwelling and puts it in the past tense, which means it applies backward across all eight moves, and the Spirit is the one who makes dwelling something felt rather than agreed to.

And I want to be careful here, because this site would be a cruelty otherwise. Nothing in this makes the eight moves good. They were not a plan for your growth and they are not a gift in disguise, and no article here is going to tell you that not belonging anywhere is secretly better.

What this does not solve

I am not going to tell you the pause will go. It will not, and the question will keep coming, and you will still have to choose between three towns at a dinner party next month.

What changes is what the pause is standing on. Right now it is standing on nothing, which is why it takes two seconds. It could be standing on an answer you do not say out loud.

You have a dwelling place that has held all eight addresses inside it, and it was given rather than found. Psalm 90:1 puts the dwelling in all generations, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line into ground under a woman between leases.

One plain sentence before we go on. If not belonging has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line first. That is not weakness in somebody who has moved a lot. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So stop answering that question as if it were a test you keep failing.

Pick one of the three towns and use it. Genuinely, this is the practical part: choose the one that makes the next twenty seconds easiest and say it without the pause, because the pause has been carrying a weight that the question was never asking about.

You have an answer to where you are from that no dinner party will ever ask for, and it has been true across all eight. Psalm 90:1 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can walk into a room holding.

And then, tonight, in whatever kitchen you are currently in, say the real one out loud to God. Once. Not as a coping strategy. As an address.

You are at home with Him, right now, as you read this, and you have been at home in every one of those eight houses. Psalm 91:9 says you have made the Most High your habitation, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in every kitchen you have ever unpacked.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the dwelling place was given to you, so the authority to say where you are from is yours and it does not belong to a dinner party. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for eight hard moves, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like this land in a woman between leases. However He answers about roots and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and having a home town in order to belong somewhere was never a job He handed you.

  1. Question where are you from, you do not get to decide whether I belong anywhere. Psalm 90:1 makes God Himself the dwelling place in all generations, and it is written in the past tense, so it covers every one of the eight.
  2. Two second pause I have been paying for at every introduction, you do not get to stand on nothing any longer. Not having a town is not a fault in me, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding at every new job.
  3. Lord, You have been my dwelling place in all generations, and I have been living in You in eight houses without knowing what to call it. Your word says I have made the Most High my habitation. I thank You, and I am putting something on a shelf tonight as though it will stay.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
