The barn went up on a Tuesday night in March and by Thursday the whole valley had a sentence about it.
He heard the sentence at the feed store first. Then at the diner, then twice at the sale barn, and by April it had worn smooth from use: that man just kept going. Never missed a day. You have to admire it.
He has been standing in the yard most mornings since, coffee going cold, looking at the black frame at the top of the lane, and here is what he would tell you if the two of you were leaning on the same gate and nobody was listening.
He did not keep going. He does not know what happened. There are whole weeks of that spring he cannot produce for you. He remembers the smell and he remembers the insurance man's shoes and he remembers standing in the milking parlor at four in the morning with his hands on the rail not moving, and then it was June and the corn was in and somebody said you have to admire it.
That is not modesty. Modesty is a way of talking. This is a man looking honestly at a stretch of road and finding no tire tracks.
You have a stretch like that. Yours might not have smoke in it. But there is a season in your life that everybody around you has a tidy sentence about, and you have no sentence at all, because you were not driving.
What it cost, said plainly, before anybody admires anything
The valley skipped this part, so let us do it here.
It cost sleep for a year. It cost the version of him that used to find things funny at the feed store. It cost the ordinary right to answer a question honestly, because the honest answer would frighten people and then he would have to take care of them about being frightened, and there was nothing left for that. And it cost him being seen. Not seen as struggling. Just seen, plain, by somebody who was not already holding a compliment.
You have been through a stretch that took more out of you than anybody around you has priced, and God has never once handed you the bill for it. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed is not what He breaks and smoking flax is not what He puts out, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a farmer's sentence like that and lays it down on an actual man in an actual yard. He is not standing at the top of the lane waiting for a better performance.
He is a strong hold, and a strong hold is known from the inside
There is one line built for a man in a yard with cold coffee.
The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that trust in him.Nahum 1:7
Read the order. Good first. Then a strong hold. Then, and this is the part the valley cannot say about him, He knows them. Not admires them. Knows them. The whole verse is a door swinging inward, and everything that matters about it happens on the other side of that door where nobody at the diner has ever been.
You are inside a strong hold right now, and being inside it is what the whole valley has been calling grit. That is not a compliment dressed up as theology. The written word puts the hold and the knowing in one sentence and hangs the weight on His half, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping a man upright in a season his own reserves ran out of in April. Nobody at the feed store thanked the right person. They cannot see walls.
And here is the thing that has to be said, or this whole site turns cruel. That fire was not a display. It was not lit so a valley could learn something from watching a man cope. God did not burn a barn to make a point at the sale barn. He is not an exhibit and he never was, and neither are you.
Two things a man with no tire tracks has to hear
The first is that God still shelters people. Not sheltered, once, in a poetic older world. Shelters, present tense, this morning, in this yard. If a strong hold is only a nice old metaphor, then that spring was just unusually good coping, the valley had it right, and there is nowhere to take the weeks he cannot produce.
The second is that the hold is over him. Now. Not over stronger men. Not over people who had a better April.
You have a shelter that was given to you rather than earned by you, and it does not come down on the mornings you bring nothing into the yard. Psalm 62:7 puts the salvation and the glory and the strength all in God rather than in the man standing there, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a floor under boots rather than a line in a book.
And a plain word before we go further. If the mornings have stopped being heavy and started being frightening, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please say it out loud today to one real person, and if it is darker than that, call your doctor or a crisis line first. That is not a crack in the hold. That is the hold arriving through somebody with a telephone, and reaching for it is obedience rather than giving up.
So stop answering them. Not rudely. You still have to buy feed. Just stop taking the sentence in.
When a man at the counter says you have to admire it, he has handed over a small invoice, and it has been getting paid every week with an explanation nobody has. Set it on the counter. The honest answer to how that place is still being farmed is not a description of a farmer at all. It is a Name, and the diner is not owed the full version of it.
You have the second half of that verse in your hands this morning, and the second half is what has been carrying the whole load. Nahum 1:7 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and turns it into a place a tired man can go and sit down.
Go inside it. That is the whole of it. Not stand at the top of the lane explaining it to the valley. Inside.
You were carried through a spring you had no resources left to survive, and the carrying was not yours. Deuteronomy 33:27 puts the everlasting arms underneath, and the same Spirit who wrote that is the one who had hold of a man in a milking parlor at four in the morning with his hands on the rail.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the yard, with the black frame in front of you. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the strong hold was given to you, so the authority to say what has been holding you up is yours and it does not belong to the feed store. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for a hard year, and the same Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a tired man. Whatever comes of the rebuild, and however He answers about it, the outcome is His and explaining Him to the valley was never your job.
- Burned frame at the top of the lane, you are not a monument to my grit. Nahum 1:7 calls the Lord a strong hold and then says He knows the ones inside it, and the valley has been admiring the wrong thing since April.
- Fear that I made it through on my own and cannot do it twice, you do not get the last word on me. There were no tire tracks because I was not driving, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I quit being able to hold.
- Lord, You are my strong refuge and You are the whole answer to a question the diner keeps asking about me. Your word wrote the hold and the knowing into one line and gave the weight to Your half. I thank You, and this morning I am standing inside it instead of out front explaining it.
