The Eldest Son And Every Phone Call

This message is for the eldest son who takes every phone call from home and has never once said not tonight

Eleven at night, and the phone goes, and he answers it, because he always answers it.

It is not an emergency. It almost never is. It is the boiler, or the letter that came, or a long circling conversation about his brother that will arrive at no conclusion and will happen again on Thursday. Forty minutes, usually. Sometimes an hour and ten.

He has answered every one of these since he was twenty three. He is thirty nine now.

His wife has stopped saying anything about it, which is worse than when she used to. He has a shape in the sofa. He knows which corner of the hallway has the signal. He has learned to make a cup of tea one handed.

And here is what he has never once done, not one time in sixteen years: said, tonight is not good, can I call you tomorrow.

Not because he would be punished. Nobody in his family is cruel and nobody would say a word. It is simpler and older than that. He is the eldest, and the eldest answers, and that has been true since before he had any say in it.

You know that phone. Yours might be a text, or a knock, or a name that comes up and something in your chest goes ahead of you. Some role landed on you young and you have never once tested whether you were allowed to put it down.

The Eldest Son And Every Phone Call

Count what sixteen years of eleven at night has cost

Nobody has counted it, so let us, plainly and once.

It has cost him his evenings, which is not a small category: sixteen years of the hours between eleven and midnight, which is where a marriage actually lives.

It cost him his thirties in a way he did not notice happening. Friends stopped suggesting things because he was always about to be needed, and a man does not get told that is happening, he just finds one day that nobody suggests things.

And it has cost him something in his own body, which is a low readiness that never switches off, so that even on the nights the phone does not ring, he is not resting. He is waiting.

You have been on duty since you were twenty three, and God has never once put you on that schedule. Psalm 127:2 says it is vain to rise up early and sit up late eating the bread of sorrows, and that He gives His beloved sleep, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes beloved off a page and puts it on a man in a hallway with a phone against his ear. The eldest is a position in a family. It is not a position with Him.

He gives his beloved sleep, and the giving is the point

There is one line built for a man who has not had an untroubled evening since he was twenty three.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he gives his beloved sleep.Psalm 127:2

Notice the word vain. Not wrong, not sinful, not selfish. Vain, meaning it does not achieve what it is trying to achieve. The verse is not accusing anybody of over working; it is telling a man that the extra hours are not producing what he thinks they are producing.

And then the second half, which is the whole gift: for so He gives His beloved sleep. Given, again. Not earned by getting the list down, and not scheduled between one thing and the next, and it is His Spirit who makes given into something a man can actually take at eleven at night.

You have sleep that was given rather than earned, and it does not wait for the family to be settled. That is not a soft reading of a hard psalm. The written word calls the extra hours vain and calls the man beloved in the same sentence, and the Spirit is the one who makes beloved land on somebody who has been a function since he was twenty three.

And let me be plain, once, because otherwise this becomes another duty. Rest here is not a discipline you are behind on. I am not telling you what it should look like, I am not asking you to have a conversation with your mother about boundaries, and you have not failed anybody by being tired at thirty nine.

Saying not tonight is not the same as saying no

The fear underneath this is worth naming, because it is the actual obstacle and it is not silly.

The fear is that the role is load bearing. That if he does not answer, something happens: the boiler is not sorted, his brother is not talked down, the whole arrangement quietly comes apart, and it will be traceable to one Tuesday when he did not pick up.

You are not the thing holding that family upright, and being relieved of that is not the same as abandoning them. Psalm 121:4 says He who keeps Israel does not slumber or sleep, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a relief rather than a rebuke: somebody is awake, and it does not have to be him.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the low readiness has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you answer any family call. That is not the role failing. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and telephone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So put one thing down tonight. One.

Not the family, not the role, not the phone forever. Pick the smallest thing you have been holding up for other people and set it down until tomorrow. Do not announce it. Do not explain it, and do not have a conversation about boundaries, because that turns rest into a negotiation and there has been enough of that.

You have permission that was never mine to give and was never withheld, and one thing can go down tonight. Psalm 127:2 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a man can actually do at eleven at night.

And if the phone rings while it is down, it rings. That is not an emergency and it will still be there in the morning.

You are beloved, and beloved is a word about who you are rather than a word about what you answer. Zephaniah 3:17 says He rests in His love toward you, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in that hallway on every one of those calls.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the hallway. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the rest was given to you, so the authority to put something down belongs to you and it does not belong to a position in a family. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for sixteen long years, and the same Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man who has never once said not tonight. However He answers about your brother and your mother, the outcome is His, and holding that family upright was never a job He handed you.

  1. Phone that rings at eleven every night, you do not own my evenings. Psalm 127:2 calls the extra hours vain and calls me beloved in the same sentence, and only one of those two words was ever about my performance.
  2. Fear that the whole arrangement falls over if I do not pick up, you do not get another sixteen years. Psalm 121:4 says the one keeping Israel does not slumber, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding by staying awake.
  3. Lord, You give Your beloved sleep, and You rest in Your love toward me while I am the one who never rests. Your word says the late hours were vain the whole time. I thank You, and I have put one thing down tonight and told nobody in that family.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
