The Town Looking At My Family

This message is for the mother walking out of a courthouse after her son's hearing, feeling the whole town look at her family in one glance

Fourteen steps down from the courthouse door to the sidewalk, and she counted every one of them.

Her son is nineteen. He is behind her with his hands in his pockets and his hood down because she asked him to put it down, which was the only thing she had any control over this morning. The hearing took eleven minutes. Eleven minutes, after four months of not sleeping.

And on the sidewalk there is the town. Not a crowd. This is not a film. Just a Tuesday morning in a small place: a woman she went to school with, coming out of the bank; two men outside the hardware store; somebody's mother she has seen at a hundred school events. And every single one of them does the same thing, which is look, and then look somewhere else quickly, and that combination is how a town says a sentence without opening its mouth.

By this evening it will have traveled. By Sunday it will be settled.

She gets in the car and puts both hands on the wheel and does not start it, and what is going through her is not about the hearing at all. It is this: they think they know what kind of house we are.

You may not have a courthouse. But you have a day when something private about your family became visible, and you have felt a place look and then look away, and the looking away is somehow the loudest part.

The Town Looking At My Family

Say what it costs before anything else gets said

Nobody on that sidewalk has counted it, so we will.

It cost her four months of sleep before the eleven minutes. It cost her the church she used to sit near the front in, because she moved to the back in March and has not moved forward since. It cost her the ordinary version of the supermarket. It cost her the friendships that got quiet, not out of judgement exactly, but because nobody knew what to say and so they said it less often until it stopped.

And it costs her a thing that is hard to name: the low, tiring work of walking into every room already knowing what has been decided in it.

You have been carrying a whole town's conclusion for four months, and God has never once formed one about your house. Psalm 103:8 says the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes slow to anger off a page and puts it in a parked car with two hands on the wheel. The sidewalk arrived at something in one look. He has never been in a hurry with you.

The God who sees, and the difference between seeing and looking

There is one line built for a woman nobody has actually asked about.

And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her, You God see me.Genesis 16:13

The woman who says that is at the bottom of everything. Alone, pregnant, in a desert, running from a household where she was a problem to be managed. And she is not the sort of person the book was expected to stop for. She gives God a name, which almost nobody in Scripture does, and the name she gives Him is about being seen, and it is His Spirit who makes that land on a woman in a parking lot rather than staying in a story about a servant girl.

You are seen by the one who came out to a desert for one woman nobody was looking for, and the seeing has no verdict in it. That is not a comfort I arranged for a hard morning. The written word gives a runaway servant the naming rights, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a settled thing in a mother's chest. The town looked. He sees, which is a different verb entirely.

And this must be said plainly, or the site turns cruel. Your son's hearing is not a display. It was not arranged so that a town could learn something from watching a family cope. God did not permit four months in order to make a point outside the hardware store. Neither of you is an exhibit and neither of you ever was.

The article does not fix the town

I am not going to hand you a way to change what a small place has decided. There is not one, and a technique for it would be one more job on a morning that already has too many.

What can change is whose sight you are standing under while the town does its looking. Two things happened on that sidewalk, and only one of them had the whole picture.

You have been fully seen the entire time, and the seeing began long before the hearing. Psalm 139:1 says searched and known, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a place to stand rather than a fact to accept.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the four months have gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours when carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody in that town. That is not the family failing. That is God sending help with hands and a phone number, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So stop answering the town. Not out loud. It has not asked you anything out loud.

For four months you have been walking into rooms and silently entering a plea, and no one in any of those rooms is a court, and you have been representing yourself in a case nobody has actually brought.

You have a hearing that already happened before the one this morning, and the seeing there was complete. Genesis 16:13 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it a settled thing in a woman with her hands on a wheel.

So drive home. Get your son something to eat. Let the town be a town.

You were seen by God on the courthouse steps, and He was the only one there with the whole four months in view. Psalm 34:15 says His eyes are on and His ears are open, and the same Spirit who wrote that was on that sidewalk at ten past nine.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car with the engine off. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the seeing was given to you, so the authority to say who has looked at this family is yours and it does not belong to a sidewalk. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for a hard four months, and the same Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a mother this tired. However He answers about your son and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and defending your house to a town was never a job He handed you.

  1. Courthouse steps in front of everybody, you are not the story of my house. Genesis 16:13 has a woman nobody was looking for giving God a name, and the name she gives Him is about being seen.
  2. Plea I have been entering in rooms that are not courts, you do not get to run my mornings. Four months of representing myself is enough, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is carrying what I have been carrying up and down that sidewalk.
  3. Lord, You are the God who sees me, and You came out to a desert for one woman with nothing arranged. Your word says Your eyes are on me and Your ears are open. I thank You, and I am driving home under Your sight instead of theirs.
