A Church That Reorganized Around Young Families

This message is for the older woman whose church reorganized around young families and who now sits in a building she helped pay for and does not recognize

She helped pay for the extension in nineteen eighty six and she cannot find a chair she likes in it now.

The extension is fine. The extension is not the problem. She gave forty dollars a month for four years toward it, out of a wage that did not run to that, and she is glad, and she would do it again.

What happened is slower and harder to name. Over about six years the whole building reorganized around young families, which is right, and which she has said out loud in meetings and meant. The service moved. The seats came out and chairs went in. The tea schedule became a coffee station. The room she used to run a group in on Wednesdays is a nursery and has a gate on the door.

And on a Sunday now she sits in a chair, on a floor she paid for, in a building she can navigate in the dark, and there is nobody to talk to at the end because the people she talked to are dead or in a home or moved to be near their children.

Seventy eight. Fifty one years in that congregation.

You know that room. Maybe not a church. But somewhere there is a place you built or paid for or held together, and it went on without needing the version of you that did it.

A Church That Reorganized Around Young Families

Say what it costs, and do not call it change

There is a way of writing this that calls it change and moves on, and that is not honest, so let us count it.

It cost her the Wednesdays. Eleven years of a group she ran, and no version of it exists now, and nobody in that building could tell you it happened.

It cost her the end of the service, which is where church actually happens for a person living alone, and which is now twenty minutes of standing near a coffee station being smiled at by people who are busy.

And it costs her, every single week, a small internal ruling that she is not going to say any of this out loud, because saying it would make her the old woman complaining about the young families, and she would rather sit in a chair she does not like for the rest of her life than become that.

You have been holding a loss with nowhere to put it, and God has never once reorganized around anybody else. Psalm 71:9 says do not cast me off in the time of old age and do not forsake me when my strength fails, and it is His Spirit who takes that off a page and puts it in a chair on a floor she paid for. That prayer is in the book because somebody needed it and it was answered.

They still bring forth fruit in old age

There is one line built for a woman of seventy eight in a chair she does not like.

Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.Psalm 92:13 and 14

Read the verb planted, because it is the load bearing one. Planted is not the same as attending. It is a word about being put somewhere by somebody, with roots, in ground, and it is done to a person rather than by them.

And then still bring forth fruit in old age, which is not a promise that the building will change back. It is a promise about production, in a season, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes still a live word to a woman who has begun to suspect her usefulness ended somewhere around the second reorganization.

You are planted rather than attending, and planted is something that was done to you rather than something you keep up. That is not a consolation for being sidelined. The written word gives the planting to God and the flourishing to the old, and the Spirit is the one who makes bring forth fruit a present tense about a Sunday rather than a comfort about a legacy.

And I want to be careful, because this site would be a cruelty otherwise. Nothing here says the reorganization was wrong, and nothing here promises you that anybody will come and ask you about the Wednesdays. And nothing here makes not fitting the new shape into who you are.

What this does not do

It does not give you the room back. The gate stays on the nursery door and the service stays where it moved to, and this article changes nothing about the building.

What can change is where you understand yourself to be sitting. At the moment it is a floor you paid for in a building that moved on. There is another description, and it is not sentimental, it is a fact about location.

You have been planted in a house, and the planting was not undone by a rearrangement of the furniture. Psalm 92:13 gives the planting to God, and it is the Holy Spirit who turns a written line into ground under an actual chair.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the Sundays have gone somewhere heavier, if the loneliness at the end of a service has become something darker, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line first. That is not weakness at seventy eight. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So stop measuring your place by the furniture.

That is the specific thing. For six years your sense of belonging in that building has been indexed to the chairs and the schedule and the Wednesdays, and every one of those has moved, and the indexing is what has been hurting rather than the moving.

You have been planted in the house of the Lord, and planting is deeper than any arrangement of a room. Psalm 92:13 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the same Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a woman of seventy eight can sit down on.

And then, this Sunday, speak to one young mother at the coffee station. Not to be useful and not to prove anything. Just say one sentence to one person, because a tree that is still bearing does not have to be on the grid to drop fruit where somebody is standing.

You are at home with God in that building, and you have been through every reorganization it has had. Psalm 91:9 says you have made the Most High your habitation, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in that room since nineteen eighty six.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at home with the kettle on. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the planting was done by Him, so the authority to say where you belong is yours and it does not belong to a floor plan. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for six hard years, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a woman of seventy eight. However He answers about that congregation and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and fitting the new shape in order to belong was never a job He handed you.

  1. Room I helped pay for, you do not get to retire me. Psalm 92:13 says planted, which is a word about being put in ground by somebody, and it is not the same word as attending.
  2. Ruling I make every week that I will not say any of this out loud, you do not get another Sunday. Naming a loss is not becoming the woman who complains, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding in a chair since the second reorganization.
  3. Lord, You planted me in Your house and You said they still bring forth fruit in old age, and still is the word I am standing on at seventy eight. Your word says I have made the Most High my habitation. I thank You, and I am speaking to one young mother at that coffee station on Sunday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
