Nine years, and there is a spreadsheet.
He is precise about this because precision is what he has instead of feelings about it. Column A is the boiler service, annual, October. Column B is the gutters, twice a year, and he does them himself because the quote was absurd. The insurance renews in March. The gardener comes every two weeks from April and monthly after that. There is a tab for the car, a tab for the appointments, and a tab, which he has never shown anybody, for the things that will need doing when she can no longer manage the stairs.
His father died in the September. He drove up the following weekend to sort out the paperwork and he has been driving up ever since.
At a family lunch last year, a cousin said, admiringly, you have kept that house going single handed for nine years. And his mother said, quietly, he has, you know, and looked at him, and he changed the subject to the traffic.
He does not know how to say the true thing, which is not that he resents it, because he does not. It is that he has no idea what has been funding it. He is not a naturally dutiful man. He does not have the temperament for nine unbroken years of anything. He looks at that spreadsheet the way you would look at somebody else's work.
You know this. Some long obligation you have carried without a break, and no sense at all of where the carrying is coming from.

Say what nine years cost, and say it plainly
Nobody at that lunch counted it, so we will.
It cost every second weekend for nine years, which is roughly two hundred and forty weekends, which is close to five years of Saturdays. It cost a relationship in the fourth year, quietly, the way those things go, without anybody naming the drive as the reason. It cost him the habit of making plans, because a man who is always about to be needed stops proposing things.
And it cost him September, every year, which arrives before he remembers what it is and which he has never once marked.
You have been carrying a whole decade in the parts of your life nobody itemizes, and God has never once treated your obligation as an obligation. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and His Spirit is the one who takes near off a page and puts it in a car on a Friday evening on a road he could drive asleep. The spreadsheet has never once been the point.
Daily loaded, and the loading is His
There is one line built for a man who cannot explain his own persistence.
Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.Psalm 68:19
The word to sit with is daily. Not once, generously, at the start, with the expectation that a man will make it last. Daily. Which is a strange word to use about benefits, because it implies that the previous day's did not carry over, and that is exactly right and exactly how this has worked.
And the verb is loads. It is His action. The man in the sentence is the one being loaded, not the one lifting, and the same Spirit is the one who makes that a live description of a nine year drive rather than a line of praise.
You have been loaded daily for nine years by somebody who does not run down, and none of it was drawn from a store of duty in you. That is not a compliment with a psalm attached. The written word makes the loading His and makes it daily, and the Spirit is the one who has got a man into a car every second Friday since a September nine years ago. His cousin said single handed. Psalm 68 does not say single handed about anybody.
And this needs saying plainly. Your father's death is not a display. It was not arranged so that a family could learn something about sons by watching you drive. God did not take him in September to give anybody a story about you. He was not a lesson and you are not an exhibit.
Two things a man with a spreadsheet has to hear
The first is that God still supplies people daily. Not supplied, poetically, in an older world. Supplies, present tense, on a Friday, on that road.
The second is that the supply was not a response to his character, which he is right about: he does not have the temperament for this, and it has happened anyway, for nine years, which is the actual evidence.
You were loaded on days you were not grateful and days you were, and the loading never once consulted your mood. Lamentations 3:23 says His compassions are new every morning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes new every morning into a fact about specific Fridays rather than a general encouragement.
One plain sentence before we go on. If the drive has started to feel heavier, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call your mother. That is not the nine years cracking. That is God sending help with a face and a phone number, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So stop auditing your own motives.
That is the thing that has been going on at the edges of this for nine years: checking whether the driving comes out of love or duty or guilt, never getting a clean answer, and quietly concluding that a man who has to check is probably doing it for the wrong reason.
The audit is the wrong instrument. It was never running on your motives. It has been running on a daily loading, and the loading arrived on the guilty Fridays exactly as it did on the good ones.
You have a Loader rather than a reserve of duty, and nine years is what that looks like from the outside. Psalm 68:19 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a precise man can actually enter in a column.
So do the gutters on Saturday. Not out of virtue. It never was virtue.
You were carried through nine years and every single day of it was loaded rather than borrowed. Isaiah 46:4 says He has made and He will bear and carry and deliver, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in that car on every second Friday since September.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car before you set off. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the loading was given to you, so the authority to say what has funded nine years is yours and it does not belong to a cousin at a lunch. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for a long decade, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like this land in a man with a spreadsheet. However He answers about the stairs and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and generating nine years of duty out of a temperament I do not have was never a job He gave me.
- Nine years of somebody else's roof, you are not a debt I have been paying. Psalm 68:19 makes the loading daily and makes it His, and the man in that sentence is the one being loaded rather than the one lifting.
- Audit I run on my own motives every second Friday, you do not get another mile. Checking whether it is love or duty was never the question, and in the name of Jesus His Spirit is the one who has been loading it.
- Lord, You daily load me with benefits and You are the God of my salvation, and there are nine years of Fridays underneath that sentence. Your word says You have made and You will bear and carry and deliver. I thank You, and I am doing the gutters on Saturday on Your loading rather than on mine.
