The garage smells of tire rubber and coffee somebody made two hours ago. There is a radio on a shelf between two mugs, a plastic chair with a split in the seat, and a calendar from a parts supplier still turned to the wrong month.
The car goes up on the ramp and Denise stands in the doorway with her arms folded, waiting to be told what it will be this time. It is nineteen years old. It has done a number of miles she stopped repeating out loud because of the face people make.
The mechanic is under it a long while. Then he says, "Come and have a look at this."
She ducks under the sill. He puts the flashlight on a section of metal above her head, up inside the arch where nobody would ever see it, and there is a plate there. Welded on. Not a garage job, either. Somebody has cut it, shaped it, run a neat line all the way round and painted over it in a color that never matched anything.
"Whoever did that," he says, "did you a proper favor. That is the only reason this side of the car is still in one piece. You have been driving on that for years."
Denise stands there under her own car with her neck bent back, looking at a piece of steel she did not know existed.
She has no idea who welded it. Her dad, maybe, before he got ill, in the summer she was too busy to notice what he was doing in the driveway. Or somebody at a garage twenty years and three owners ago who never mentioned it. It was done quietly and it was done well, and every single one of those years she thought she was getting away with something is a year she was being held together by a plate she never once thanked anybody for.
You know the sentence people say to you. They say it kindly and they say it often. I do not know how you are still standing. I could not have done it. You are so strong.
And you smile, because what else is there, and then afterwards, on your own, the real thought comes and it is not a comfortable one. You do not know either. You cannot account for the last stretch. And somewhere in the middle of that not knowing, a fear has moved in and quietly settled: that the honest answer is nothing, that you have been running on fumes and nerve, and that the day it finally gives way will not surprise anybody, least of all you.

Something Is Welded Under There
Let me take the fear first, because it is standing in the doorway of everything else.
The fear is that you have been running on your own reserves and the tank is nearly out. That is a reasonable thing to believe and it is not what has been happening. You are being carried, and you have been carried the entire way. The reason the last stretch cannot be accounted for is not that something extraordinary got done. It is that the thing holding you was underneath rather than inside, and His Spirit has been doing that quietly, without narrating any of it.
"The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms."Deuteronomy 33:27
That is written, and it is worth reading slowly, because the geography of it is the whole point. Not beside. Not out in front where you could watch it and take comfort at the time. Underneath. In the place you have never once been able to see, doing the load bearing, without a word.
And I want to name what that means about the last few years, because you have been quietly ashamed of not knowing. You did not manage it. It is the plainest possible reading of the verse, and His Spirit is the one who makes that arrive as relief rather than as an insult. Nobody in Scripture is congratulated for the arms being underneath them. They are simply underneath.
Then hear the second thing, which is the one that undoes the fear properly. Paul writes of Christ that in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17). All things. The far edges of the universe and the sill of a nineteen year old car and a woman getting up at six for the fourteenth month of something she never chose. Holding together is not a favor He does when He has a moment. It is what He is doing continuously, everywhere, including in you, including on the days you were sure you were falling apart, and especially then.
So when somebody tells you they do not know how you are still standing, they are not wrong. They are looking at a plate they cannot see and calling it your character. The strength is real. It was simply never yours, because His Spirit has been the load bearing all along, and the pressure comes straight off the moment that is true rather than flattering.
The Stones Do Not Explain The River
There is a moment after Israel crossed the Jordan when God tells them to do something that looks unnecessary. Twelve men go back into the riverbed and each one carries out a stone, and the stones get stacked where the people camp that night.
"When your children ask in time to come, 'What do those stones mean to you?' then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord."Joshua 4:6-7
Read what the answer is not. Nobody is asked to explain how they coped with a river. There is no account of how well they organized the crossing, no reflection on their resilience as a people, and no inventory of who kept their nerve. The stones point at one thing only: the waters were cut off, and here is who cut them.
That is the sentence you have never said out loud about your own last stretch.
You have been given a mouth and the authority to use it, and this is where the whole thing turns. Christ is in you and you are in Christ, so saying what God did is not a claim about yourself that would then have to be defended. Joshua 4:7 is doing the talking and His Spirit is the one who makes an old crossing land in a garage doorway in this century. Speaking is not decoration. It was God's own idea for how a thing gets remembered, which is why He asked for stones rather than feelings.
And notice that the stones were set up before anybody understood the crossing. Nobody waited until it made sense. They said what happened while they were still wet.
You do not have to work out how you managed it. That question has no answer, and you have been sitting an exam that was never set. Scripture never set that paper, and His Spirit is not standing over you with a red pen. The question you can answer is a different one and much shorter. Not how did I survive that. Who was underneath it.
Something can turn here, this morning, and it is not going to feel dramatic.
You are held right now, underneath, by the God who is called the dwelling place of everybody who ever lived, and this is not a thing you have to keep up. Deuteronomy 33:27 is written, it is finished, and His Spirit is the one making it live in a body while it is being read. Nobody needs to feel strong for the arms to be there. Denise did not feel the plate.
Two things this is not. It is not a compliment about your grit turned round and handed back to you with God's name on it. If that is all you take, you will be carrying the same weight tomorrow with a nicer word for it. And it is not a promise that the pressure lifts on any particular day, because I have not been told that and I will not sell it to you.
And if the truth this morning is harder than that, if today has found you on the floor with the last stretch having taken everything, hear it plainly. You are on the floor and the arms are still underneath you, which is exactly where they do their work. Deuteronomy 33:27 says underneath rather than merely alongside, and His Spirit is nearer to a person on the floor than to anybody managing beautifully.
If you are frightened for yourself, or the thought has come that you cannot carry on, please put this down and speak to a human being today: emergency services, your doctor, or a crisis line. That is not weakness arriving. That is the plate under the sill, and this time it looks like somebody with a telephone.
Declare this over yourself
Say these aloud. The authority to name what God did was given to you in Christ, and Scripture is the ground under every word while His Spirit carries it. What comes next in your situation, and when, is His to decide, and none of it depends on you first working out how you got here.
- Underside of these years, you are not empty and you never were, because there is something welded there that I did not put on. The word of God says underneath are the everlasting arms, and arms that hold do not have to be seen to be holding. I have been carried the whole way, and I am saying so this morning.
- Sum I keep doing that says I am running on nothing, you do not balance and you never did. In the name of Jesus I stop working you out, because the answer was never inside me and Scripture never once asked me to find it there. I am not sitting an exam that God did not set.
- Lord, You have been underneath this the entire time and You have never made me watch You do it. I thank You, because in You all things hold together, and Your Spirit has been the load bearing on every day I could not account for. The stones are for what You did, so here is mine, said out loud, in Your name.
