One Sentence I Read Once

They have been quoting him for three years and it is not his.

The sentence is: you do not have to attend every argument you are invited to. He said it once, in a meeting in the autumn of his second year, to a woman who was being pulled into a fight with another department, and it landed, and she repeated it to somebody, and now it is in the culture of that floor. He has heard it said back to him by people who do not know he said it first.

He read it. In a book, in a hotel room, in a different city, in about 2019, and he does not remember the book. That is the whole provenance.

And what has grown on top of it is a reputation. He is the one people bring things to now. Wise, they say. Old head. And they bring him actual situations, with actual people in them, and he does his best, and mostly it goes all right, and every single time he is aware that the foundation of the whole edifice is a line he did not write about a fight he was not in.

You know that feeling. Something you said once, or did once, has been generalized into a quality, and you have been living inside the generalization ever since.

Count the cost of the borrowed sentence

Let me be exact about what costs him, because it is not the borrowing.

Repeating a good line is not theft and nobody is harmed by it. What costs him is the distance between what people bring him and what he has, because they bring him weight, and he receives it as if he were the kind of man the sentence implies, and he is not sure he is, and he has never once said so.

It costs him about an hour a week of other people's problems, which he does not begrudge.

And it costs him a low, constant tax that is harder to describe: he is now performing wisdom in real time in situations where the honest answer is I do not know, and a man cannot say I do not know once he has been called an old head for three years, and that closed door is where the tiredness lives.

You have been carrying a reputation you did not build, and God has never once assessed you against it. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes frame off a page and puts it on a man at a rooftop table at six in the evening. He has never quoted anybody's sentence back at you.

He gives liberally, and He does not upbraid

There is one line built for a man who has been treated as a source and knows he is not one.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him.James 1:5

Notice two things and stay on both. First, the assumption in the sentence: if any of you lack wisdom, said to believers, as an ordinary condition rather than as a scandal. Lacking it is the expected state.

Second, and upbraids not. That is a specific promise about tone. God does not sigh, does not point out that you were asked about this last month, does not mention that people call you an old head. He gives, and He does not make a face while doing it, and it is His Spirit who makes upbraids not land on a man who has been braced for the sigh.

You have a supply of wisdom that arrives on request without a comment attached, and lacking it was always the assumed condition. That is not a way of letting a man off being wise. The written word makes the asking normal and the giving liberal, and the Spirit is the one who does the giving in the exact meeting where the honest answer was I do not know.

And I want to say the plain thing, because the wrong comfort would ruin this. The relief here is not that you really are wise underneath and should own it. It is that the wisdom was never supposed to be a reserve you keep. It is given, per situation, on request, and the giving is not conditional on your track record.

What handing it back looks like at work

There is a fear here and it is practical rather than spiritual.

The fear is that admitting the sentence was borrowed, or that the reputation is oversized, will cost him something real. Standing. Influence. The thing that makes people bring him situations in the first place, which he values, because being brought things is most of what makes a job feel like it matters.

You are not going to lose your usefulness by naming the source, and the source has been doing the work in every one of those conversations. 1 Corinthians 4:7 asks what you have that you did not receive, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that question a relief rather than a rebuke.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the performing has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you talk to anybody at work. That is not the reputation cracking. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
