His Own DoingGalatians 5:22

The Patience That Ran Out On Tuesday

This message is for the woman everyone praises for her patience, who knows exactly what she said in her kitchen on Tuesday at ten past six

Ten past six on Tuesday, in her own kitchen, with the pasta water boiling over.

She will not write down what she said. It was eleven words and it was aimed at a nine year old about a coat on a floor, and the disproportion of it is the part she cannot get past. Not the volume. The way the sentence had clearly been assembled somewhere in her and was simply waiting for a coat.

He cried. She apologized, properly, on his level, twice. He forgave her the way children do, instantly and completely, which somehow made it worse.

And on Thursday, at the school gate, a woman she barely knows said: honestly, I do not know how you stay so patient with them. You never lose it. I would have snapped weeks ago.

She said something and got in the car.

Here is the exact shape of the problem, and it is not guilt. She is not lying awake because she shouted at a child, which happens in every kitchen in the world. She is lying awake because there is a version of her walking around the school gate that she knows is not in there, and she cannot correct it without making a scene, and every compliment welds it on a bit tighter.

You know that gap. Somebody names a quality in you and you have the receipt for the opposite in your pocket from Tuesday.

The Patience That Ran Out On Tuesday

Name the cost of the gap, not the failure

Let me be careful here, because the wrong thing to count is the shouting.

What costs her is not Tuesday. Tuesday is ordinary and forgivable and forgiven. What costs her is the maintenance: keeping a version of herself upright at a school gate that she knows to be false, which is a low continuous expenditure that nobody else can see.

It costs her the friendship that might have started on Thursday, because a real answer would have begun a real conversation, and she gave the other one.

And it costs her something worse. She has begun to distrust every good thing said about her. If the patience is not real, what else is not, and once that question gets loose it goes everywhere.

You have been paying to maintain a picture nobody asked you to hang, and God has never once been shown that version of you. Psalm 139:1 says He has searched you and known you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes searched off a page and puts it in a kitchen at ten past six on Tuesday with the pasta boiling over. He was there for the eleven words and He did not revise anything.

The fruit belongs to the vine, and that is the relief

There is one line built for a woman who has been given credit for something she does not have.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.Galatians 5:22

Read the first four words and stop there for a second. The fruit of the Spirit. Not the fruit of a well managed temperament, not the fruit of a woman who has learned to count to ten. Of the Spirit, which is a statement about origin, and origin is the whole subject of this article.

Which means the patience the school gate has been admiring, on the days it was genuinely there, was never hers to have in stock, and it is His Spirit who makes that a relief rather than a technicality about grammar.

You have been credited with fruit that grew on somebody else's vine, and handing it back is not modesty, it is accuracy. That is not a way of talking a woman out of a compliment. The written word attaches the fruit to the Spirit by name, and He is the one who has been producing it in a kitchen for years, including on the days it ran out at ten past six.

And this is the thing that has to be said plainly, because the wrong comfort would ruin it: the relief here is not that you really are patient underneath. You are not, and neither am I, and neither is anybody. The relief is that the fruit was never on your account in the first place.

What handing it back actually does

There is a fear here worth naming, because it is what stops people doing this.

The fear is that handing it back is a way of getting out of responsibility. That saying it is the Spirit rather than me is a dodge, and that a serious person would simply try harder to be patient on Tuesdays.

You are not dodging anything by naming the source, and the trying is not what has been producing the fruit anyway. John 15:5 says that apart from Him you can do nothing, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes nothing a relief rather than an insult, because a branch that stops pretending to be a root can finally rest.

One plain sentence before we go on. If Tuesday sits heavier than a bad evening, if the distrust of good things said about you has gone somewhere darker, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before anybody at that gate. That is not a failure of patience. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So hand it back, out loud, by name. That is the whole move and it takes about nine seconds.

Not as self deprecation, which is just the same picture painted in a different color. As accurate attribution: this thing they keep naming in me is Yours, it came from You, and the Tuesdays are mine and You have not revised anything about me because of them.

You have fruit growing on you that came from somewhere else, and giving it back does not leave you empty handed. Galatians 5:22 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can actually say at a sink.

And then let the school gate say what it says. You will not correct it and you do not have to. What they think is not the thing that has been costing you; the maintenance was, and the maintenance can stop today.

You were never that good, and you were never required to be, and the fruit came anyway. John 15:5 says He is the vine and you are the branch, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in your kitchen at ten past six on Tuesday.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the kitchen sink. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the fruit was given to you rather than grown by you, so the authority to name where it came from is yours and it does not belong to a school gate. Scripture is the ground here, not my reassurance about your character, and the same Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a woman who is still ashamed of Tuesday. However He answers about the years of mothering ahead, the outcome is His, and being the patient one for a school gate was never a job He handed you.

  1. Ten past six on Tuesday in my own kitchen, you are not the disqualification you look like. Galatians 5:22 calls it the fruit of the Spirit, which is a statement about where it grows and not about who deserves it.
  2. Distrust of every good thing anybody says about me, you do not get to spread any further. The gap is real and it is not a verdict, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is producing what I cannot keep in stock.
  3. Lord, the patience they keep naming in me is Yours and it came off Your vine, and I am handing it back where it belongs. Your word says that apart from You I can do nothing. I thank You, and I have stopped maintaining a picture of myself at that gate.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
