He has told nobody, and it has been a year.
Not out of pride. He worked it out early: if he says it once, it becomes a subject, and then every corridor has a small careful question in it, and he will spend the next eighteen months managing other people's sympathy on top of the thing itself. So he has said nothing, to anyone, since last September, and he has become extremely good at the four second answer.
The court date is in March. His mother's letter came in June and he read it standing up in the hallway and then went in to work and cataloged a nineteenth century parish collection for six hours without a mistake.
That is the part that unsettles him most, if he is honest. Not the crying. The not crying. The fact that the work is clean.
Last month a colleague brought him a coffee and said, half joking, that nothing gets to him and that they should study him. Two other people laughed and agreed. He said something dry and went back to the box.
Here is the sentence he does not have anywhere to put. There is no reserve in here. What you are calling unflappable is a man who has been running on a fuel he cannot identify since last September, and I would like to know what it is, because I would like to know how long it lasts.
You may not have a reading room. But you have a year that nobody at work knows about, and a competence that keeps holding up, and a private suspicion that you are about to run out of something you never located in the first place.

Price the year before you admire the calm
Nobody has priced it, so here it is.
It costs him the ordinary company of other people, which he traded away deliberately and now cannot get back without a speech. It costs him June, which he has never actually looked at, because looking at it in the hallway was not possible and the moment passed. It costs him the difference between being known and being useful, and he has been the second one for a year.
And it costs him at four in the morning, which is where a man who has told nobody does all his talking.
You have been carrying two things alone for a year, and God has never once asked you to justify the arrangement to Him. Psalm 142:3 says that when the spirit is overwhelmed within a man, He knows the path he walks, and the same Spirit is the one who takes an old line about a cave and lays it on a man cataloging a parish collection with clean hands. Nothing in that year was unwitnessed.
The rock is where the strength was, and it was never in the man
There is one line built for a man with clean work and nothing behind it.
In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.Psalm 62:7
Notice the preposition and stay there a moment. In God. Not from God, which would still leave the strength in the man once it had been delivered. In. The strength never leaves the rock. What a person gets is not a tank of something; what a person gets is a place to stand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves that from a fine distinction to an actual floor under an actual pair of shoes.
You have been standing on a rock all year, and standing on it is what your colleagues have been mistaking for a temperament. That is not a compliment with theology draped over it. The written word puts the strength in God rather than in the man and does not hedge it, and the Spirit is the one keeping somebody upright in a year his own reserves ran out in October. The reading room admired the wrong thing. Nobody in a reading room can see a rock.
And this must be said plainly or the site turns cruel. Your brother's case and your mother's letter are not a display. Neither was arranged so that an institution could learn something from watching a quiet man cope. God did not set a court date to make a point over a coffee. You are not an exhibit and you never were.
Two things a man who has told nobody has to hear
The first is that God still shelters people. Not sheltered, once, in a poetic older world. Shelters, present tense, this afternoon, at that desk. If the rock of my strength is only an elegant old line, then this is unusually good composure, the joke about studying him was correct, and there is nowhere at all to take June.
The second is that the rock is under him, now, with the box half sorted. Not under men with fewer things. Not under people who told somebody.
You have a refuge that was given to you rather than earned by you, and it does not shift on the days the fuel finally does run out. Proverbs 18:10 says the name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous runs into it and is safe, and it is His Spirit who makes runs into it a thing a body does rather than a thing a mind approves.
One plain sentence before we go on. If the four in the morning conversations have gone somewhere darker, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely in question, tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody at work. That is not a crack in the rock. That is the rock arriving with a face and a phone number, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So stop answering them. Not coldly. You can keep the dry line for the coffee.
When somebody says nothing gets to you, they have handed you a small invoice, and you have been paying it since September with an explanation you do not have. Set it on the box lid. The honest answer to how the work stays clean is not a description of an archivist at all. It is a Name, and the department is not owed the full version of it.
You have the rock in your possession this afternoon, and the rock is what has been carrying a year you thought you were carrying. Psalm 62:7 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a written line and makes it something that actually bears weight.
Go and stand on it. That is the invitation. Not stand in the corridor being studied.
You were held through a year you had no located reserve for, and the fuel you could not identify was never a private supply of your own. 2 Corinthians 4:7 says the treasure is in clay jars so that the surpassing power is God's rather than ours, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been the power in a quiet man since last September.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the desk. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the rock was given to you, so the authority to name what has been holding you up is yours and it does not belong to your colleagues. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for a hard year, and His Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man who has told nobody. However He answers about March, and however the letter turns out, the outcome is His, and being unflappable for an institution was never a job He handed you.
- Year of carrying two things alone, you are not my name. Psalm 62:7 leaves the strength in God rather than handing it out, and a man who has been standing on it is not the same as a man who has any.
- Suspicion that I am about to run out of whatever this is, you do not get the last word on me. There is no reserve in here and that is not a fault, it is what a rock is for, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I never located.
- Lord, You are my strong refuge and the rock of my strength, and the strength has been in You the whole year rather than in me. Your word says the name of the Lord is a strong tower that the righteous runs into. I thank You, and tonight I am running in instead of standing outside being admired.
