The Reflex Answer In The Corridor

It was out of his mouth before he knew it was coming, and he stood there afterward listening to it.

The chaplain had done the thing almost nobody does. She had stopped, put her back against the wall so she was not blocking anybody, and said, not moving on: and how are you doing. Really.

And a voice that was apparently his said: yeah, good, thanks, you know. Getting there.

Getting there. He does not know where that came from. He has not used the phrase getting there in his life. And she nodded and said if that changes, I am about on Tuesdays, and went off down the corridor, and he stood by the vending machine with a plastic cup and thought: I have just been asked, properly, by somebody whose actual job is to sit with this, and I got rid of her in four seconds.

Fourteen months his brother has been in and out of that hospital. He has been the one who drives.

Here is what he would want said. The reflex is not dishonesty. It is armor, and it went on for a good reason, and it has been going on for so long now that it moves faster than he does.

You know that reflex. Somebody asks, properly, and you hear yourself get rid of them, and then you stand there.

Say what the reflex has cost. Say it before anything else

Nobody has counted it, and it needs counting.

It has cost him fourteen months of being the driver rather than a brother, which nobody in his family has noticed, because a driver is useful and a useful man is not asked about. It cost him a conversation with his mother in the second month that he still thinks about. It has cost him Tuesdays, which he now knows about and will not use.

And it has cost him the ability to tell the difference between not wanting to talk and not being able to, which is the thing that frightens him when he is honest, which is roughly once a month at about two in the morning.

You have been wearing armor that goes on faster than you can decide, and God has never once been on the outside of it. Psalm 62:8 says pour out your heart before Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it beside a man with a plastic cup at a vending machine. The reflex has never once worked on Him and He has never once required a better answer at speed.

Pour out, and notice who the audience is

There is one line built for a man who cannot say anything true in a corridor.

Trust in him at all times; you people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.Psalm 62:8

The word doing the work is before. Pour out your heart before Him. Not to a chaplain, not to a family, not into a corridor. The first audience named in that sentence is God, and that is not a lesser option offered to people who cannot manage the human version. It is the order of operations.

Because a man who has never once poured anything out anywhere will not manage it first on a Tuesday with a stranger, and it is His Spirit who makes that a practical route rather than a piece of piety.

You have a place to pour it out that requires no timing and no four second version, and it was opened to you rather than earned. That is not a way of letting a man off the human conversation. The written word puts God first in the sequence and then leaves the rest of the sequence open, and the Spirit is the one who makes pouring out possible at two in the morning when nobody is on shift.

And let me say it plainly. Your true sentence is not a witnessing opportunity with the chaplain. Nothing here asks you to make anything of it, and what she does with four honest seconds is hers, and it was never your job.

What a true sentence sounds like in a corridor

The constraints are the same as everywhere. True. Short enough to say while somebody is standing there. And it must not put him on display in a public hallway, which is a real consideration and not cowardice.

That rules out getting there, which fails the first. It rules out telling a chaplain by a vending machine what fourteen months has actually been, which fails the third and which he would not do anyway.

What is left is short. Honestly, not great. Or: I would rather not do this here, but no, not really. Or, the shortest and the best: I might take you up on Tuesday.

You are allowed to answer honestly and briefly in a hallway, and brief is not a lesser kind of true. Psalm 62:8 puts the pouring out before God first and does not make the corridor carry it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes four honest seconds land without a speech attached.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the two in the morning has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line first, before anybody in the family. That is not the armor failing. That is what a true sentence is for, arriving properly.
