His Own Doing1 Corinthians 15:10

The Sentence I Could Not Hold

This message is for A woman who nearly canceled three times is told at the door of a midweek group that she is the steadiest person in the room, and she cannot hold the sentence because she knows what the day was actually like.

Three times that afternoon Joyce nearly texted to say she could not come. The third time she got as far as the message and then put the phone face down on the worktop and went and stood in the hall for a bit, which is where she does her deciding.

Nobody in the front room knows any of that.

Eight of them, mismatched chairs, one dining chair brought through because the numbers were up this week, a plate of custard creams somebody keeps moving so the dog cannot get at it. Fortnightly, Wednesdays, going on nineteen years in one house or another. They read a bit, they talk, they pray for whoever needs it, they run over by twenty minutes every single time. Joyce brings the same tin and sits in the same corner and says less than most people think she does.

At the end everybody is standing up and finding coats and doing the doorway conversation that always lasts longer than the meeting. A younger woman, six months in, still slightly shy of them all, touches Joyce's sleeve on the way past.

"Can I say something? You're the steadiest person in this room. I want to be like you when I've been at it as long as you have."

She means it entirely. She has thought about saying it for two weeks.

And Joyce says thank you, because what else is there, and she takes the tin home, and she is up until half past midnight because of a sentence that was meant as a kindness. Not because it hurt. Because she cannot make it fit anything she knows about herself. She knows about the phone face down on the worktop. She knows what she said to her sister on Sunday and how long she has been not ringing her back. Steadiest person in the room, and she has forty minutes of evidence from before she left the house that would settle the matter for anybody who had it.

You have had that sentence said to you. Maybe last week. Somebody names a thing in you as though it were the plain obvious truth about you, and something in your chest goes tight, because you are the one person in the world who knows what today actually cost and what you are like when nobody is in the room.

The Sentence I Could Not Hold

Two answers that do not work, and the one that does

The first answer people offer is to argue you into agreeing with them. They really do see something. You really are steadier than you think. Believe the compliment.

It does not hold, and it never has, because nothing about the forty minutes was a lie. You know the inside of the day. Any relief built on a better opinion of yourself lasts exactly as long as the next hard evening, and then it is the worktop and the phone face down all over again.

The second answer is to refuse it. Deflect it, make the small joke, get out of the doorway. That does not work either, and it costs the person who said it something, because they had thought about that sentence for two weeks and you handed it straight back to them wrapped in a laugh.

There is a third answer and it is the only one that has ever held weight. It is not yours. It was never yours. And that is not modesty, it is the plain accounting of it.

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.1 Corinthians 15:10

Look at how strange that sentence is, and how honest. Paul does not deny the description. He does not do the thing we all do at doorways. He says the visible thing is real and then, in the same breath, he hands it over, twice. By grace I am what I am. It was not I. He accepts the observation and refuses the ownership, and both halves are in one verse, which is exactly what nobody ever taught you to do with a compliment.

So take this before we go any further. You are not a fraud for being unable to feel a good thing that other people can plainly see. 1 Corinthians 15:10 puts the credit for anything worth seeing in a person where it belongs, in the grace of God, and it is His Spirit who has been doing the work at hours when nobody was watching and no notes were taken.

That is the relief, and notice where it comes from. Not from a better verdict on Joyce. From the work having an owner, and the owner not being Joyce.

There is a cost in this, and this site will not pretend otherwise. The steadiness people are seeing has been paid for in hallway minutes nobody counted, in Sunday phone calls that did not happen, in tiredness that has no interesting name. That is real and it is expensive, and nothing here turns it into a display for anybody's benefit. You were never put in that room to be looked at.

But hear what the doorway conversation was actually reporting, and let it be a comfort rather than a demand. You have been held up by something other than your own constitution, and the Wednesdays after the afternoons you nearly missed are the evidence. 1 Corinthians 15:10 calls that grace and does not call it strength of character, and the Spirit of God who has been the strength of it is not confused about whose work it is even when you are.

I have spent my life around old manuscripts, and there is something in that world about credit that is worth borrowing. A page will sometimes come to us in beautiful condition after eight hundred years, and everybody admires the scribe, and the scribe deserves it. But most of what has kept that page is nothing the scribe did: the dryness of a particular room, the height of a particular shelf, four or five people across the centuries who moved it away from a window. The keeping was mostly done by hands the page never met. Anybody who has worked with old things stops being surprised by that and starts expecting it, and it takes nothing from the writing to say so.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the forty minutes before you left the house has been happening more often, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you tell anybody in that front room. That is not a failure of steadiness. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

Something is being handed over here, and it is not a compliment. It is the whole weight of having to be the explanation for yourself.

You have been carrying that since you were young, and you were never built to carry it. 1 Corinthians 15:10 never once asked you to. What is written puts the source outside a person and the Spirit of God has been the one at work inside, which is why the sentence at the doorway can be allowed to stand without anybody having to verify it out of a memory of the day.

So the credit goes back. Not into the air, not into a polite general gratitude, back to God by name, out loud, which is a very different act from either arguing with the compliment or swallowing it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself, tonight, with the tin still on the side. The authority in the lines is His, delegated, and it is exercised by people who open their mouths rather than by people who can feel what they are saying. It never took a great weight of faith to hand something back to its owner. It takes a mouth and a name. Scripture is the ground under all of it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living in a tired woman at midnight, and whatever He does with what anybody sees in you next Wednesday, He does.

  1. Word they used about me at the door, you are kind and you are not a finding. Scripture says by the grace of God I am what I am, so I do not have to be able to feel you before I let you stand.
  2. Habit of checking my insides for proof, you have kept me up past midnight for years and you were never qualified to sit as the judge. In the name of Jesus I take the case out of your hands, because the word of God puts the credit for anything good in a person in the grace of God, and the Holy Spirit has been working in me on days I could not watch.
  3. Lord, the steadiness they saw in that room is Yours and I am handing it back to You by name. I thank You, because You always finish what You are doing in a person whether or not they can feel it, and what it cost me today is safe with You and does not need explaining to anybody.
