Wholly At HomePsalm 27:10

The Son Who Left The Family Trade

This message is for the man who left the family trade at twenty two and has never been forgiven for it at his father's table since

Twenty six years and it has never been said out loud once.

That is the thing about a coldness at a table. There was no argument. There was no scene. He said, at twenty two, that he was not coming into the business, and his father said, all right, and passed the potatoes, and something changed at that table that afternoon and has never been mentioned since.

He goes back four or five times a year. His father is seventy nine now. They talk about the roof and the truck and the price of things. Twice a visit his father says something that is not quite a dig, and the not quite is the whole architecture: it can never be answered because it was never quite said.

His brother took the shop. His brother is fine. There is no villain anywhere in this and that is part of why it has lasted so long.

And what he has never said to anybody, including his wife, is that he still sits down at that table at fifty one with about eleven percent of himself braced, the way you brace on a stair you know is loose, and he has been doing it so long he does not notice it until he is back in the car.

You know that stair. A room where a thing was never said and never resolved, and you go, and you brace, and nobody has ever mentioned it.

The Son Who Left The Family Trade

Say what the coldness costs, and do not soften it

Nobody in that family has ever counted it, so let us.

It has cost him twenty six years of visits at eleven percent. That is not a large number until you multiply it by about a hundred and thirty afternoons.

It cost him his own choice. This is the part nobody sees: the work he left for was good, he has done it well, and he has never once been able to enjoy it in front of his father, so a whole professional life has happened in a room his family has never entered.

And it costs him what is coming. His father is seventy nine, and every visit now carries the arithmetic, and he has begun to be frightened of a funeral at which a thing that was never said becomes permanently unsayable.

You have been braced at a table for twenty six years, and God has never once had a coldness with you. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes near off a page and puts it in a car outside a house on a Sunday afternoon. There is no room in that sentence for a not quite dig.

When father and mother forsake me

There is one line built for a man in a car outside his father's house.

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up.Psalm 27:10

Be careful with that word forsake, because it is stronger than what happened to him and he will resist the verse on those grounds. His father did not abandon him. There was a coldness and a not quite, and that is not the same as being cast out and he knows it.

But look at what the verse is actually doing. It is not describing a category of orphan. It names the worst version of a real thing, and then it puts God's taking up in the same sentence, which means the taking up covers everything less than the worst as well, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes take me up an active verb about a man of fifty one rather than a line for people with terrible parents.

You have been taken up by somebody who did it without a coldness, and the taking up did not wait for the table to be fixed. That is not a way of writing a father off. The written word names the worst case and answers it, and the Spirit is the one who has been in that car after every one of those hundred and thirty afternoons.

And I want to be plain, because this site would be a cruelty otherwise. Nothing here promises you that your father will say it before he dies. He may not. No article of mine is going to tell you the people who did not receive you will come round, and I am not going to make a lesson out of your twenty six years.

What this does not do

It does not fix the table. You will go back at Christmas and there will be a not quite dig somewhere between the meal and the coffee, and this article will not have changed one thing about that room.

What can change is what you are braced against. At the moment you are braced against a verdict that has never been delivered and cannot be appealed. There is another verdict, delivered, and it is not about the trade.

You have been received in a house that has no coldness in it, and the receiving was finished long before the potatoes got passed. Psalm 27:10 puts the taking up in the same sentence as the worst case, and His Spirit is the one who makes a written line into a floor under a man at fifty one.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the arithmetic about your father's age has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody in the family. That is not weakness. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So stop bracing against a verdict that has never been delivered.

That is the specific move, and it is available in the car before you go in. For twenty six years you have gone up that path waiting for a sentence that your father does not have the equipment to say, and the waiting is the eleven percent, and the eleven percent is what has been exhausting you rather than the visit.

You have a house that received you completely, and its door does not depend on what gets said between the meal and the coffee. Psalm 27:10 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a man can walk up a path holding.

And then go in and talk about the roof. Let the visit be a visit. Your father is seventy nine and the roof is a real subject and there is no dishonor in it.

You are at home with God, right now, as you read this, and you have been at home at every one of those hundred and thirty tables. Psalm 91:9 says you have made the Most High your habitation, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in the car after every single one of them.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the taking up was given to you, so the authority to say who has received you is yours and it does not belong to a table. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for twenty six long years, and it is His Spirit who makes a line like this land in a man of fifty one who still braces. However He answers about your father and whatever is or is not said before the end, the outcome is His, and getting that sentence out of him was never a job He handed you.

  1. Chair at my father's table, you are not the last room I get. Psalm 27:10 names the worst version of this and puts God taking a man up in the same sentence, which covers everything short of the worst too.
  2. Verdict I have been bracing against for twenty six years, you do not get another hundred and thirty afternoons. It has never been delivered and it cannot be appealed, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding at eleven percent.
  3. Lord, You take me up, and You have never once had a coldness with me across a table. Your word says I have made the Most High my habitation. I thank You, and I am walking up that path this Christmas without waiting for a sentence.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
