Somebody asked him at a work thing what he had been reading and he watched himself ruin it in real time.
The honest answer was a book about the transmission of a particular manuscript family through the twelfth century, and he knows, he genuinely knows, that the correct move is to say something short and pivot. He has been told. He has practiced.
What came out was forty seconds long, contained a subordinate clause about scribal error, and ended with him hearing his own voice say the word colophon in a room where somebody was holding a paper plate.
The man he was talking to was perfectly nice about it. That is worse. He said, huh, that is interesting, and then looked slightly past him, and then said something about the parking.
Thirty years of this. He is fifty two. And what has hardened over about the last decade is not embarrassment; embarrassment passes. It is a settled working theory that the way his mind runs is a defect with a social cost, and that the correct lifelong management strategy is suppression, and that he has been failing at that strategy since he was twenty two.
You know this. Maybe your mind does not do footnotes. But there is something about how you are built that you have concluded is a fault, and you have been managing it rather than living in it.

Say what the theory costs. Not the incident. The theory
The forty seconds cost him nothing. A man said huh and talked about parking and neither of them will remember it in a year.
The theory is what costs.
It costs him thirty years of half participation, because a man who believes his own mind is a liability enters every room with the volume down and is therefore never actually in it.
It cost him a great deal of what he knows, which is not small and which almost nobody has ever had the benefit of, because he has been suppressing rather than translating.
And it costs him something at church specifically, which is where it has gone deepest: he has never once offered anything, in twenty years, in a building full of people who would have been glad of it, because the theory says the thing he has is not the kind of thing anybody wants.
You have been managing a mind that God arranged, and He has never once treated it as a defect. Psalm 139:16 says His book had your substance written when there was none of it, and His Spirit is the one who takes substance off a page and puts it in a man of fifty two at a work event with a paper plate in his hand. The specification is His and He has not been apologizing for it.
God has set the members, and set is the verb
There is one line built for a man who thinks he is the wrong shape for the room.
But now has God set the members every one of them in the body, as it has pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18
Three things and every one of them is for him. Set, which is deliberate placement. Every one of them, which allows no exceptions and therefore includes the odd ones. And as it has pleased him, which makes the arrangement a matter of God's preference rather than of function or convenience.
And the context is a chapter about parts that do not look like the parts around them, written to people who had concluded that being different meant being surplus, and the same Spirit is the one who makes set land on a man who has spent thirty years assuming he was a manufacturing error.
You were set deliberately, and the setting pleased Him rather than being tolerated by Him. That is not a way of telling somebody their social difficulties do not matter. The written word makes the placement God's action and the arrangement His pleasure, and the Spirit is the one who makes that reach a theory that has been hardening for a decade.
And I want to be careful, because this site would be a cruelty otherwise. Nothing here tells you that your mind is a gift the world does not deserve, which is a flattering lie and a lonely one. And nothing here makes not fitting into your identity, because a man whose whole self is being the odd one has let thirty rooms name him.
What this does not fix
The forty seconds will happen again. Possibly this month. This article does not offer a shorter answer and is not trying to, because thirty years of advice about shorter answers has already been tried and it was never the problem.
What can change is the theory. Because the theory is doing the damage: it is not the forty seconds, it is the decade of concluding something about yourself from them.
You have a place that was set for you and pleased Him, and no work event has ever had the authority to revise it. 1 Corinthians 12:18 puts the setting in God's hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground under a man of fifty two.
One plain sentence before we go on. If the theory has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line first. That is not weakness. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So offer something once. That is the specific move and it is not a personality change.
Not at a work event. At church, or to one person who has time, offer the thing you actually have: the footnote, the manuscript family, the twelfth century, at whatever length it takes. One person. Once. Because thirty years of suppression has trained you to believe that what you carry is unwanted, and the only evidence that will touch that theory is somebody wanting it.
You have been set in the body deliberately, and what was set in you was not put there to be managed. 1 Corinthians 12:18 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a man can open his mouth on.
And if it goes badly, it goes badly, and you will have lost forty seconds, which is what the last thirty years have shown you is the actual price.
You are at home with God at full length, and you have been in every room where you turned the volume down. Psalm 91:9 says you have made the Most High your habitation, and the same Spirit who wrote that was standing there when you said the word colophon.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the study or the car. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the setting was His, so the authority to say what you are for is yours and it does not belong to a room of small talk. Scripture is the ground here, not my reassurance about your social skills, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like this land in a man of fifty two with a working theory. However He answers about the rooms and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and being easy company for everybody was never a job He handed you.
- Way my mind works in a room of small talk, you are not a defect in the design. 1 Corinthians 12:18 says God has set the members, every one of them, as it pleased Him, and pleased is a word about preference and not tolerance.
- Theory I have been hardening for a decade that suppression is the strategy, you do not get another thirty years. Forty seconds is not a life sentence, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding with the volume down.
- Lord, You set me in the body as it pleased You, and my substance was written in Your book before there was any of it. Your word says I have made the Most High my habitation. I thank You, and I am telling one person the real answer this week at its real length.
