She has had flu twice in nine years and nobody in that family knows about either of them.
The second time was worse. She took the Monday off work, told nobody, moved two things in the calendar, answered the group chat from bed at eight forty and at eleven and again at three, sent the reminder about her father in law's appointment, and got up on the Wednesday because there was a thing on the Thursday.
She is the one who remembers. Birthdays, appointments, who has fallen out with whom, which brother needs telling twice. There are twenty two people in that chat and she is the reason it functions.
And here is the fixed point of the whole thing, the sentence that has never once been said out loud in nine years: nobody has ever asked her if she is all right, because she is the person you ask that of somebody else about.
She noticed something at Christmas. Her sister said, laughing, that she had never seen her ill. Not once. Isn't that funny.
It is not funny. It is a report on nine years of a woman keeping a shape.
You know that shape. Maybe your version is calm rather than well. Somewhere there is a form other people expect you to hold, and you have held it so long that being anything else would now count as news.

Say what the shape has cost. It has cost more than sleep
Nobody in that chat has counted it, so let us.
It has cost her two weeks of proper convalescence over nine years, which the body does not forget. It cost her a friendship in the fourth year with a woman who tried to reciprocate and could not find the way in.
It cost her the ordinary experience of being looked after, which is a thing a human being needs a few times a decade and which she has now not had since her twenties.
And it has cost her the option. That is the expensive one. After nine years of being the well one, being ill in front of them would now be an event, and she cannot afford an event, and so the shape holds itself.
You have been holding a form that has hardened into an obligation, and God has never once asked you to keep it up for anybody. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and the same Spirit is the one who takes frame off a page and puts it in a bedroom on a Monday with a phone on the pillow. He has never been part of the group chat.
Come to me, and notice what is not in the sentence
There is one line built for a woman answering messages from bed.
Come unto me, all you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
Read what the qualification is. Laboring and heavy laden. That is the whole entry requirement, and it is not a description of somebody who has collapsed, it is a description of somebody who is working, which she is, at eight forty in the morning with a temperature.
And read what is offered. Rest, given. Not permission to rest once the list is done. Not a rest she has to schedule between the Thursday and the appointment. Given, as a thing handed over, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes given into something a woman can actually receive without having earned a gap first.
You have rest that was given to you rather than scheduled by you, and it does not wait for a clear week. That is not a comfortable reading of a famous verse. The written word makes the laboring the qualification rather than the disqualification, and the Spirit is the one who makes receiving possible for somebody who has not received anything in nine years.
And I want to say this plainly, because otherwise this article becomes the twenty third thing on her list. Rest here is not a discipline you are now behind on. I am not prescribing what it should look like, I am not asking you to announce anything to that family, and you have not let one person down by being tired.
Putting it down is not the same as dropping it
There is a fear under all this and it is worth naming, because it is the actual obstacle.
The fear is that the shape is load bearing. That if she is ill in front of them, something in that family falls over: her father in law misses an appointment, two brothers stop speaking, the whole thing quietly comes apart, and it will be traceable to her.
You are not the thing holding twenty two people together, and being relieved of that is not the same as abandoning them. Psalm 127:1 says that unless the Lord builds the house they labor in vain that build it, and it is His Spirit who makes that a relief rather than a rebuke.
One plain sentence before we go on. If the tiredness has stopped being tiredness and gone somewhere flatter or more frightening, if there are hours when carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you tell the family. That is not the shape failing. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and phone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So name one thing and set it down for today. One. Not the chat, not the calendar, not the whole shape.
Pick the smallest one you are holding up for other people, and put it down until tomorrow. Do not announce it. Do not explain it to the family or ask anybody's permission, because both of those turn rest into another performance and there is enough performance in this already.
You have permission that is not mine to give and was never withheld, and you can put one thing down today. Matthew 11:28 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can actually do at three in the afternoon.
And if the family notices, they notice. That is not an emergency and it is not your problem to solve at speed.
You were given rest, and given is the word, and nothing about it is contingent on a clear week appearing. Exodus 33:14 says His presence goes with you and He gives rest, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in that bedroom on every Monday you took off and told nobody about.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the empty room. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the rest was given to you, so the authority to put something down belongs to you and it does not belong to twenty two people in a group chat. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for nine hard years, and His Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a woman who has not been ill in front of anybody since her twenties. However He answers about that family, the outcome is His, and holding twenty two people together was never a job He handed you.
- Nine years of hiding being ill, you are finished being my rule. Matthew 11:28 makes the laboring the entry requirement rather than the disqualification, and I have never once failed to qualify.
- Fear that this family falls over if I stop, you do not get to run another Monday. Psalm 127:1 says the house is not built by the ones laboring at it, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding by never sitting down.
- Lord, You said come to Me and I will give you rest, and give is the word I am standing on today. Your word says Your presence goes with me and You give me rest. I thank You, and I have put one thing down until tomorrow and I have told nobody.
