The Calm One Crying In A Parking Lot

This message is for the woman who is the calm one in her friendship group and cried in a grocery store parking lot on Tuesday with the engine still running

The engine was still running. That is the detail she keeps coming back to.

Tuesday, half past four, the parking lot at the grocery store, a cart still in the corral three spaces over. She had got in the car with two bags and had not driven anywhere, and it came up out of nowhere and lasted about four minutes, and she does not know what it was about.

Nothing had happened. That is what makes it hard to say to anybody. There was no incident. There was a normal Tuesday and a shopping list and then something opened.

In her group of friends she is the calm one. It is not a role she took. It arrived somewhere around twenty five, and now if there is a crisis at eleven at night it comes to her, and she is good at it, and she does not resent it. She is genuinely steadying.

And in the four days since Tuesday she has thought about telling one of them roughly forty times and has not, because there is nothing to report. What would she say. I cried in a parking lot for no reason. And then what.

You know that engine. Yours might have been a stairwell or a shower or the car outside your own house. Somewhere the calm came off for four minutes and there was nothing underneath it that could be explained to anybody.

The Calm One Crying In A Parking Lot

Name what being the calm one costs

Nobody in that group has counted it, so let us, gently and once.

It has cost her the option of arriving anywhere unsettled. Everybody else in that friendship can turn up in a state and be met. She cannot, because her turning up in a state would be, in itself, an event, and by now she can feel the shape of that from a long way off.

It cost her about eight years of small withholdings, none of which were anything, all of which add up.

And it has cost her her own weather. That is the phrase for it. She has been so long at the business of reading everybody else's that she genuinely does not know what she is feeling until it comes up in a car with the engine running, at which point it arrives all at once and unexplained, and then she has to manage that too.

You have been holding the weather for other people, and God has never once asked you to be steady for anybody. Psalm 56:8 says your wanderings are told and your tears are put in His bottle, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes bottle off a page and puts it in a parking lot on a Tuesday at half past four. Four minutes went somewhere. He caught all of it.

Lead me to the rock, and who is doing the leading

There is one line built for a woman who cannot get herself calm.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto you, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.Psalm 61:2

Read what he asks for. Not to be made calm. Not to be given the strength to steady himself, which is what everybody assumes prayer is for. He asks to be led, which is a request for somebody else's legs, and he asks for a rock higher than he is, which is an admission that the available high ground is not high enough.

That is the whole prayer and it is four words long in the middle: lead me to the rock. Nothing about it requires the person praying to have got hold of themselves first, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a live sentence for four minutes in a car rather than a poetic image.

You have a rock that is higher than you, and being led to it does not require you to arrive composed. That is not a soft reading of a short psalm. The written word makes overwhelmed the starting condition rather than the disqualification, and the Spirit is the one doing the leading while a woman sits with a shopping list on the passenger seat.

And let me be plain, because otherwise this becomes another thing to manage. Rest here is not a discipline you are behind on. I am not telling you to have a conversation with your friends, I am not asking you to explain Tuesday to anybody, and no one in that group has been let down by a woman who cried in a car.

Four minutes with no reason is not a warning

The fear under this is specific, and naming it is most of the work.

It is that Tuesday means something. That it is the first crack, the beginning of some slower coming apart, and that a woman who is the calm one for six other people cannot afford to be at the beginning of anything.

You are not at the start of a collapse, and four minutes in a car is not a diagnosis. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and the same Spirit is the one who makes frame a word about ordinary limits rather than about failure.

One plain sentence before we go on. If it has happened again since Tuesday, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call any of those friends. That is not the calm failing. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and telephone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So put one thing down. One, today.

Not the role, not the friendships, not the eleven at night phone calls. Pick one small thing you have been steadying for other people and set it down until tomorrow. Do not explain it, do not tell the group, and do not make Tuesday into a topic.

You have permission that was never mine to give and was never withheld, and one thing can go down today. Psalm 61:2 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can actually do with two bags of shopping on the back seat.

And if it comes up again in a car, let it come. Four minutes is not a warning and you do not have to file a report on it.

You are led to a rock higher than you are, right now, as you read this, and being led is not the same as being carried off duty. Psalm 61:3 says He has been a shelter and a strong tower, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in the passenger seat on Tuesday at half past four.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the rock was given to you, so the authority to put something down belongs to you and it does not belong to a role that arrived when you were twenty five. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for a hard Tuesday, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a line like this land in a woman who has been the calm one for eight years. However He answers about that group and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and holding everybody's weather was never a job He handed you.

  1. Parking lot with the engine running, you are not a failure of my job. Psalm 61:2 makes an overwhelmed heart the starting condition of the prayer rather than the thing that disqualifies it.
  2. Fear that Tuesday was the first crack in something, you do not get to run my week. Four minutes in a car is not a diagnosis, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding for six other people.
  3. Lord, lead me to the rock that is higher than I am, and the leading is Yours because my own high ground is not high enough. Your word says You have been a shelter and a strong tower. I thank You, and I have set one thing down until tomorrow and told nobody.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
