The One Who Organizes Every Funeral

This message is for the man who has organized every funeral and every birthday in his family for eleven years and has never been the one somebody organized anything for

He knows the number of the funeral home by heart and he has never once had to look it up.

That is the sentence he heard himself say last month, out loud, to his cousin, and it stopped him for a second.

Eleven years. His grandmother, then his uncle, then a cousin who was thirty four, and in between all the other things: the ninetieth, the christenings, the anniversary lunch for his parents which he did on his own including the cake. He knows which aunt cannot sit near which. He knows the caterer. He knows that the church parking lot fills at ten past, so the family cars have to come at five to.

And after his uncle's, in the parking lot, his sister hugged him and said, honestly, what would this family do without you, and he said something and got in the car.

Here is what has never happened in eleven years, not one time. Nobody has organized anything for him. Not out of unkindness. There is simply no slot in the arrangement for that, because the arrangement has him at the top of it, and a man at the top of an arrangement is not somebody you arrange things for.

You know that role. Maybe it is not funerals. But somewhere you are the one who does it, and eleven years in, there is no version of the room where somebody does it for you.

The One Who Organizes Every Funeral

Say what eleven years has cost

Nobody at that parking lot counted it, so let us.

It has cost him his own grief, three times over. That is the plain fact of it. He has been at the back of three funerals with a clipboard in his head, and there is no version of those days where he got to be a grandson or a nephew, and those days do not come round again.

It has cost him about nine weekends a year for eleven years.

And it has cost him something he only noticed last month: he no longer knows what he would want at his own family's table if he were not running it, because he has not sat at one as a guest since he was twenty six.

You have been at the back of your own life for eleven years, and God has never once handed you a clipboard. Psalm 34:18 says He is near to the broken hearted, and it is His Spirit who takes near off a page and puts it in a man in a funeral home parking lot with his keys in his hand. He was not admiring the seating. He was there for the grandson.

You are not able to perform it alone, and that is a diagnosis

There is one line built for a man who runs everything.

You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you: for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it yourself alone.Exodus 18:18

Let the Holy Spirit hold you there a moment. That is said by a father in law to a man who is doing an unquestionably good and necessary thing, and doing it well, and doing it for genuinely dependent people. Notice that nobody suggests the work is wrong or that the people do not need it.

The observation is about capacity, and the words are blunt: too heavy, and not able alone. That is not an accusation, it is a load calculation, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes it land as care rather than as criticism.

You have been carrying something that was correctly described as too heavy, and saying so is not a failure of love for your family. That is not a soft reading of a blunt passage. The written word calls the load too heavy while affirming the work, and the Spirit is the one who makes that distinction feel like relief rather than exposure.

And let me be plain, because otherwise this becomes another arrangement. Rest here is not a duty you are behind on. I am not telling you to hand anything over, I am not asking you to have a conversation with your sister, and no member of that family has been let down by a man who is tired.

Putting one thing down is not resigning

The fear here is worth naming plainly, because it is specific and it is not vanity.

The fear is that if he stops, the family stops. Not dramatically. It simply thins: the ninetieths do not happen, the cousins drift, the thing that has held four branches of a family together for eleven years quietly stops being held, and it will be traceable to him.

You are not the thing holding four branches of a family together, and being relieved of that is not the same as letting them go. Psalm 127:1 says that unless the Lord builds the house they labor in vain that build it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a relief rather than a rebuke.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the eleven years have gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody in the family. That is not the arrangement failing. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and telephone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So put one thing down. One, this month.

Not the role, not the funerals, not the phone number you know by heart. Pick the smallest arrangement on your list and set it down until next month. Do not announce it, and do not have a conversation about handover, because a handover is an arrangement and you have enough of those.

You have permission that was never mine to give and was never withheld, and one thing can go down this month. Exodus 18:18 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the same Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a man can actually do without a meeting.

And if somebody notices, they notice. That is a short conversation and it is not an emergency.

You were told the load was too heavy by somebody who loved the man carrying it, and being told that is a kindness rather than a verdict. Matthew 11:28 says come to Me and I will give you rest, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in the parking lot when your sister said what would this family do without you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the rest was given to you, so the authority to put something down belongs to you and it does not belong to eleven years of precedent. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for eleven long years, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man who knows a funeral home number by heart. However He answers about that family and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and holding four branches of it together was never a job He handed you.

  1. Eleven years of somebody else's arrangements, you are not my job description. Exodus 18:18 calls the load too heavy while never once calling the work wrong, and both halves of that were said by somebody who loved the man carrying it.
  2. Fear that this family thins out the day I stop, you do not get another eleven years. Psalm 127:1 says the house is not built by the ones laboring at it, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding by never sitting down.
  3. Lord, You said come to Me and I will give you rest, and You were in that parking lot when they told me what this family would do without me. Your word says the load was too heavy for one man from the start. I thank You, and I have set one arrangement down until next month.
