An Honest AnswerPsalm 32:2

The Summary I Gave At The Reunion

This message is for the man who was asked at a reunion by an old teacher how the years had gone and gave a tidy summary that left out every real thing

Fourteen seconds. He has reconstructed it since and that is roughly how long it took.

The hall smelled the way school halls smell, which is a thing nobody can describe and everybody recognizes. And Mr Farrell was by the trestle table with a plastic cup, eighty one years old, still with that way of tipping his head when he was listening properly.

And he said: so. Nine years. Tell me.

And out came the summary. Moved back in twenty two. Doing archive work now, actually, which is more interesting than it sounds. Mother is well. Yes, still up that way.

Every word true. All of it. Fourteen seconds of entirely accurate information from which a listener would take away nothing at all about what those nine years contained, and Mr Farrell tipped his head and waited two extra beats, and then said, good, good, and asked about somebody else.

He was out in the parking lot before he understood what had happened.

Because that man taught him for two years and once kept him back for an hour after a hard thing at home, and he is eighty one, and there may not be another reunion, and he asked, and he tipped his head, and he waited.

You have given that summary. To somebody old and kind who asked properly and had time, and you handed them a curriculum vitae.

The Summary I Gave At The Reunion

What the tidy version cost, priced honestly

Nobody prices this, so here.

It cost him fourteen seconds with a man who is eighty one. That is the whole of it and it is not small.

It cost him the two extra beats after the summary, which were an offer, and which he has never been offered by many people and will not be offered by many more.

And it cost him the thing he keeps circling back to at two in the morning: he has now had nine years of practice at compression, and he is very good at it, and it is possible that he no longer has an uncompressed version of his own life available to hand anybody at all.

You have been compressing a decade until you cannot find the original, and God has never once been handed the summary and taken it. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far off, and the same Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a school parking lot with the engine off. Fourteen seconds has never worked on Him and He has never once asked for the longer version either.

No guile, and what the word actually means

There is one line built for a man who gives accurate summaries.

Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputes not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.Psalm 32:2

The word is guile, and it does not mean lying. It is nearer to arrangement: the careful placing of true things so that a listener arrives somewhere convenient. That is exactly what fourteen accurate seconds did in a school hall.

And notice that the verse is a blessing rather than a charge. It describes a man who does not have to arrange, because nothing is being held against him, and the freedom from arrangement follows from the freedom from accusation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that order of events land rather than remain a nice piece of Hebrew logic.

You have nothing being held against you, which is the whole reason the arranging can stop. That is not a soft reading of a sharp word. The written word puts the not imputing first and the absence of guile second, in that order, and the Spirit is the one who makes an unarranged sentence feel safe rather than reckless.

And I want to say it plainly, once. The true sentence is not an evangelistic opening with an old teacher. Nothing here asks you to make anything of it. What Mr Farrell does with four honest seconds is his, and he is eighty one and he has managed nine years without your account of them.

What the true sentence sounds like by a trestle table

The constraints do not change for a reunion. True. Short, because a hall is loud and he is eighty one and there is a line behind you. And it must not put you on display in a room of people you went to school with.

That rules out the summary, which fails the first on substance if not on fact. It rules out telling a man by a trestle table what year four of those nine was actually like, which fails the third.

What is left is short. Honestly, sir, most of it has been harder than that sounds. Or: the tidy answer is the one I just gave you. The real one is that it has been a long nine years.

You are allowed to say one unarranged sentence and stop, and stopping is not withholding. Psalm 32:2 puts the freedom from arrangement downstream of the freedom from accusation, and it is His Spirit who makes an unarranged four seconds possible in a loud room.

One plain sentence before we go on. If two in the morning has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line first. That is not the compression failing. That is what a true sentence is for, arriving properly, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So write to him. That is the specific thing, because the hall is over and the line moved on.

Four lines on paper, in your own hand, to an eighty one year old man who taught you for two years and kept you back for an hour once. Not the nine years. One true sentence about them, and a thank you for the two extra beats he gave you by the table.

You have an unarranged sentence available today, and using it is not a repair of the fourteen seconds. Psalm 32:2 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a written line and makes it something a precise man can actually put in an envelope.

And then mail it and let it be received however it is received. He is eighty one and he has been receiving things from former pupils for sixty years.

You are known without arrangement, right now, as you read this, and nine years of compression never once hid a thing from Him. Psalm 139:1 says searched and known, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in that hall when the summary came out.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car before you drive home. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the freedom from arrangement was given to you, so the authority to say the unarranged thing is yours and it does not belong to a school hall. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for nine hard years, and His Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man who is very good at compression. However He answers about the years ahead, the outcome is His, and giving an eighty one year old man a complete account of a decade was never a job He handed you.

  1. Tidy summary I gave in a school hall, you do not get to be my record. Psalm 32:2 blesses the man with no guile in his spirit, and guile is not lying, it is the careful arrangement of true things.
  2. Habit of compressing until I cannot find the original, you do not get another nine years. Being accurate was never the same as being known, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is carrying what I have been carrying behind fourteen seconds.
  3. Lord, You do not impute iniquity to me, and that is exactly why the arranging can stop. Your word says You understand my thought a long way off. I thank You, and I am writing four lines to Mr Farrell this week and mailing them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
